8-bit PNG vs 24-bit PNG — what's the difference?

8-bit (PNG-8) supports 256 colors and 1-bit transparency — smaller files, good for icons. 24-bit (PNG-24) supports 16M colors and full alpha — larger, better quality. We default to PNG-24 for most assets.
